Director of Nursing - Skilled Community

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Administrator, this position is responsible the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of nursing care and services provided to residents. Ensures that Senior Lifestyle standards and state requirements for resident care are met. This position reports to the Administrator.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions:

+ Supervises nursing care provided by Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants and others whom they are administratively and professionally responsible.

+ Hires, trains, disciplines and terminates clinical employees in accordance with Senior Lifestyle Corporation human resources policy

+ Makes daily rounds, addresses all resident needs and concerns.

+ Is in charge of the community in the absence of higher ranking management officials.

+ Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.

+ Schedules and performs resident rounds to monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of nursing care.

+ Assures that adequate strategies are in place to verify the current licensure and credentials of nursing employees.

+ Maintains administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the proper charting and documentation of care and of medication and treatments.

+ Develops and implements the written staffing plan and nursing schedule that reflects the needs of the resident population.

+ Maintains current knowledge of applicable managed care, Medicare and other standards for long term care.

+ Ensures nursing staff:

+ Perform nursing assessments regarding health status of residents.

+ Contributes to the resident's assessment and development of a plan of care.

+ Makes nursing diagnosis which serve as the basis for the strategy of care.

+ Develops a plan of care based on assessment, implementing nursing care.

+ Consults with physician or other licensed practitioner.

+ Designs, promotes and organizes resident education and counseling based on health needs.

+ Accepts only those nursing assignments that are commensurate with one's own education preparation, experience, knowledge and ability, obtains instruction and supervision as necessary when implementing nursing procedures and practices.

+ Promotes and protects resident rights, assists residents to make informed decisions, treats residents with dignity and respect, protects resident's personal belongings, reports suspected abuse or neglect, avoids the need for physical restraints in accordance with the current professional standards and, supports independent expression, choice and decision-making consistent with applicable law and regulation.

+ Assists in transfers and discharges of residents.

+ Notifies physicians of change of status, makes rounds with physician as necessary.

+ Assures and supervises Staff Nurses and Nursing Assistants have completed assigned tasks.

+ Assures appropriate nursing staff coverage.

+ Assures and implements total nursing care in assigned areas, including documentation in plans of care with goals and their attainment.

+ Delegates work assignments to Staff Nurses.

+ Assures accuracy of census reports, including admissions and discharges, deaths, hospitalizations, and leaves of absence.

+ Provides physician with all appropriate consults, lab work, x-rays and other items pertaining to resident in assigned area.

+ Completes MDS (Medical Data Sheet) on all residents in assigned area including RAPS and trigger sheets.

+ Maintains a line of communication with the resident's family; answers questions that the family poses regarding care and treatment, changes in condition or transfers to other rooms, nursing unit or community.

+ Reviews and makes corrections from monthly pharmacy and medical record consult reports.

+ Ensures dietary supplements have been given and charted.

+ Understands duties during a fire drill and is familiar with evacuation plan.

+ Attends all required training, in-service, and staff meetings.

+ Strives to maintain a safe working environment through the prevention of accidents, the preservation of equipment, and the achievement of safe working practices.

+ Maintains a positive and professional demeanor toward residents, visitors, families, and co-workers.

+ Adheres to all policies and procedures of Senior Lifestyle Corporation.

+ Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Skills/Educational Requirements:

+ Must be a Registered Nurse of the state. A Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

+ Must be Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified or willing to become certified.
